The adrenal glands are endocrine glands triangle-shaped, located above the kidneys. These glands regulate the stress response of the body through the synthesis of catecholamines and corticosteroids, including adrenaline and cortisol.
The adrenal glands are not working efficiently can trigger health condition known as adrenal fatigue (adrenal fatigue). Because dysfunction of the adrenal glands, cortisol levels in the body will decrease.
Cortisol is necessary to cope with stress and fight infection. Adrenal fatigue has several other names such as non-Addison’s hypoadrenia, hypoadrenalism, sub-clinical hypoadrenia, neurasthenia.
The adrenal glands are not functioning properly can interfere with the metabolism of blood sugar resulting in fatigue and weakness.
Cause of Adrenal Fatigue
Stress is the most common cause of adrenal fatigue. Excessive stress caused by work pressure, physical activity, job change, a death of a loved one, marital problems, and physical illness.
Some other factors that contribute to stress adrenaline is fear, anger, guilt, depression, anxiety, excessive exercise, physical or mental pressure, lack of sleep, trauma/injury, surgery, exposure to toxins, chronic pain, chronic infections, poor digestion, malabsorption, chronic disease, low blood sugar, and nutritional deficiencies.
Stages of Adrenal Fatigue
In the first stage, occurs the secretion of adrenaline is higher than usual as a response to stress levels are also higher. The adrenal cortex is stimulated to produce cortisol and related hormones other in excess. The second stage is known as adaptation or resistance when stress takes place continuously.
Hormones continue to be produced in excess to raise blood sugar and blood pressure. At this stage, corticosteroids continue to be produced by the adrenal cortex to resist stress.
The third stage is known as fatigue. During this stage, the body’s ability to cope with stress eventually reduced.
The hormone adrenaline is down from too high to very low. At this stage occurs adrenal fatigue which triggers a drop in stress tolerance, accompanied by physical and mental fatigue.
Symptoms of Adrenal Fatigue
Adrenal fatigue often develops after periods of physical stress or strong emotion. Some of the common signs and symptoms of adrenal fatigue are:
- Sleep that is not refreshing
- Excessive fatigue
- A desire to eat salty and sweet foods
- Not able to cope with stress
- Stamina low, slow to recover from physical activity
- The low level of immune
- Feel most energetic at night
- Difficulty in concentration
- Bad digestion
- Premenstrual syndrome
- Extreme sensitiveness to cold
- Low blood pressure
- Weight gain
- Shaking when under pressure
- The high frequency exposed to respiratory diseases such as flu and other
- Lack of sex drive
- Pain in the upper back or neck for no apparent reason
Treatment of Adrenal Fatigue
Treatments for adrenal fatigue include eating a proper diet and lifestyle changes. The Diet should contain the amount of protein and complex carbohydrates are insufficient.
Avoid junk food, coffee, or soda. Also, avoid processed foods, tobacco, and alcohol. If necessary do some exercise such as yoga or meditation. Nutritional supplements are also important to speed up the recovery conditions.
The use of the extract of cortisol the adrenal, vitamin B complex, replacement of cortisol, cordyceps, DHEA, L-Theanine, licorice, pantothenic acid, and pregnenolone may be useful for treat adrenal fatigue.
