Swollen ankles are the inflammation of the ankle due to an accumulation of fluid in the ankle joint, or in soft tissues around the ankle.
It is also known as edema in medical terms, swelling in the feet and ankles is a common disorder faced by many people.
Difficulty walking, swelling, and pain in the ankles, body weight, headaches, increased urination, etc. are some of the common symptoms of a swollen ankle.
However, walking or standing for long periods of time can also cause the ankles swell, but this condition may subside on its own, with adequate rest.
Causes Of Swollen Ankles
Determine the true cause of ankle swelling is the first step to finding an effective treatment. The following are some common causes of ankle swelling:
- Gout is a painful inflammation of the ankle due to the accumulation of uric acid crystals in the fluid of the ankle. Uric acid is a substance produced during digestion which helps the body in getting rid of waste materials and toxins. Patients suffering from gout have an abnormal accumulation of uric acid crystals in their joints which causes swelling and inflammation.
- Ankle Arthritis is another cause of swelling in the ankle and occurs when the joints between the shin bone (tibia) and ankle bone (talus) wear. This can be painful and occurs more often in patients who are overweight, have rheumatoid arthritis or injury to the ankle joint.
- Infection in the soft tissues around the ankle joint (cellulitis) or in the joint itself (septic joint) is unusual causes for ankles swell.
- Abnormal blood flow can interfere with normal blood circulation in the body and cause swelling around the ankle. Blood clotting is a kind of blockage of blood vessels that occur on the feet and cause ankle swelling.
- Other causes of swollen ankles are peripheral edema, which is the circulation problems that may occur in both legs. It can lead to chronic swelling in the ankle due to aging, pregnancy, excessive pressure on the blood vessels in the legs, obesity, varicose veins, etc.

- In women, menstruation and pregnancy can be the most common cause of the ankle swell.
Infections by pathogens, venous insufficiency, insect bites, malnutrition, intake of drugs such as steroids, estrogen, antidepressants, etc. are some other causes for ankles swell.
